How to make custom vinyl stickers: printed designs and cut lettering

A printed vinyl sticker and a cut vinyl decal can start with the same logo but finish differently. Printed stickers keep the artwork together on a piece of material. Cut vinyl lettering or shapes are prepared as separate elements for transfer to the surface. Choose the finished result before preparing the file.

1. Decide whether you need printing or separate vinyl elements

Choose a printed sticker when the design includes a picture, illustration or a background that should stay with the artwork. A die-cut sticker follows the outside silhouette while retaining the design on one piece. A regular circle or rectangle gives it a fixed frame.

Cut vinyl uses the material itself to form letters or shapes. The unwanted material is removed, a step often called weeding, and transfer material helps position the remaining elements together. This is a different workflow from printing a full design and cutting its outside edge; do not prepare one file assuming both processes need the same details.

2. Plan the background, outline and details

For a printed sticker, decide which background should be visible: a solid printed area, clear material showing the surface around the artwork, or a holographic effect. A transparent image file only describes the artwork; it does not automatically change the sticker material selected in the order.

Describe the outside outline and any border. The artwork is what prints, a border is visible space around it, and the cut line indicates the finished edge. Ask about fine details or interior cut areas rather than assuming every small opening will be cut. Check text at actual size and send original artwork when possible.

  • Measure the intended width and height before editing the design.
  • Keep a version you can revise if the proof needs a change.
  • State the background and border you expect to see.
  • For cut lettering, check spacing and fine elements with the supplier or your cutter’s instructions.

3. If making cut vinyl yourself, plan cutting and transfer

A home cut-vinyl project needs a compatible cutter workflow and vinyl suited to the intended application. Use the equipment and material instructions to choose settings and make a test cut. Cutting the shapes, removing the unwanted vinyl and arranging a transfer are separate steps; leave time for each.

Check whether your design has very fine lettering, tiny separate pieces or several material colors before starting. Those choices can add handling and alignment work. Compare that result with a printed sticker if you would rather keep the artwork together on one piece.

4. To order printed vinyl, configure the product and check the proof

In the Vinyl Status builder, select a shape, dimensions, quantity and finish for a printed order. Upload your file, create artwork online or choose to send it later. Clear and holographic stickers have dedicated product pages where you can review their options.

Use the free online proof to confirm the size, layout, background and cut outline. Request changes before approval, and use free design help if preparation is unclear. Production takes 2 business days after proof approval, with shipping time additional. Printed vinyl stickers include split-back easy peeling.
