Printed vinyl stickers or transfer decals?

A printed vinyl sticker carries your design on one piece of material. A transfer decal leaves individual cut letters or shapes on the surface after the application film is removed. The right choice depends on the artwork and the look you want.

Choose by the finished result

‘Sticker’ and ‘decal’ are sometimes used interchangeably. When ordering, focus on whether you want a printed background, clear material, or individual lettering with no visible background.

Choose a background for one-piece application

In the social and text builders, ‘With background’ adds a connected colored backing around the lettering and logo. It keeps the design together as one piece for peel-and-stick application. The background is part of the finished sticker, not a temporary application layer.

Choose lettering and background colors that are easy to distinguish. For white lettering, a dark background keeps it readable; for black lettering, a light background is a useful starting point. Check the preview with your actual username or text.

Choose transfer lettering for a background-free look

‘No background’ leaves the cut lettering and logo on the surface. The film that holds those pieces in position is used for application and then removed. White lettering can suit dark glass or a dark surface; dark lettering can suit a light surface.

The checkerboard in the builder indicates empty space and will not print. Think about the actual surface behind the lettering, not just the preview background. Follow the transfer decal application instructions and confirm that the product suits your surface.

Clear material is different from no background

A clear printed sticker still has one piece of transparent material around the printed design. A transfer decal has no single sheet of visible backing material between the letters once applied. If you want full-color artwork on clear material, use the clear sticker product rather than assuming ‘No background’ in a lettering builder means clear printed vinyl.

UV DTF transfers are another product with their own artwork and application requirements. Use the dedicated product page and instructions when that is the finish you want.

Check the design and application before ordering

If you are unsure which product fits your design, send the artwork and describe where it will be used. The design team can help you choose before you approve a proof.

  • Confirm whether your background is part of the print or only the preview.
  • Measure the entire design, including the social logo and every text row.
  • Choose contrast for the intended surface, especially on windows.
  • Check the spelling, selected style, dimensions, and quantity.
  • For uploaded printed artwork, review the online proof before approving production.
